Your Guide to the Island of Comino
The island of Comino attracts snorkelers, divers, and windsurfers from all over the world. This wonderful spot is dense with aromatic wild herbs and flowers and is named for the cumin that grows all around the island.
While the scent is amazing, the actual beauty of this Maltese island is the well-known Blue Lagoon.
The Blue Lagoon on Comino Island is one of Malta’s most gorgeous beaches and is well worth the trek. It’s the ideal Mediterranean getaway, located on the small, car-free islands of Comino.
Getting to Comino from Gozo
The island of Comino is easily accessible from Gozo and should not be missed. A ferry to Comino may be taken from either Hondoq Bay in Qala or the harbour in Mgarr. Ferry journeys are regular, inexpensive, and incredibly scenic at either location. Disclaimer: The two islands are connected by speed boats, so prepare for a bumpy ride!
If you’re staying in il-Wileg, all you have to do is stroll down to Hondoq Bay and get a boat from there (30 minute walk). Alternatively, you may take the bus and get to the bay in 10 minutes.
What to expect
The boat voyage to Comino Island is breathtaking. Prepare your camera for photos of the stunning caverns and sea cliffs along the way. It’s a short drive from anyplace in Malta, and the ride is Instagram-worthy from start to finish.
As soon as you arrive to Comino Island, you will see how popular it is. There are usually a large number of individuals arriving at the same time. Don’t let the crowds scare you off – while the blue lagoon is normally packed, the island is big enough to find your own private spot, and there are plenty of less popular but equally gorgeous spots to enjoy.
Where can you eat on Comino?
There are several food trucks around the Blue Lagoon where you may have some lunch. There are also two food trucks in Santa Marija Bay that provide cold beverages, hot dogs, and burgers. I would recommend bringing your own meal if you want anything nutritious. There are some vendors offering fresh fruit and beverages in pineapples near where the boats dock.
Things to do in Comino
Swim in the blue lagoon – This area has no introduction, and the stunning blue seas of this beach have lured many visitors. It is without a doubt one of the most Instagrammable spots in the Maltese islands. If you go early in the morning, you’ll have this magnificent beach all to yourself!
1. Walk around the island
Comino is a popular walking destination. You may stroll around the island on routes, one of which is 7km long and highly popular with walkers. However, this is a suggested trek from October to May because it gets far beyond 30 degrees Celsius in the summer. It was far too hot for us to be out and about with no shade and heavy backpacks.
2. Visit Landmarks
Despite its small size, the island contains various attractions with historical and cultural importance, including:
- Saint Mary’s Tower – When the flag is flying, you may climb to the top to enjoy the breathtaking views and tour the inside.
- Saint Mary’s Battery – It was built in the 18th century by the Knights of St. John and is now available to the public.
- The British Isolation Hospital – A relic from the days when Comino served as a quarantine island.
- Saint Mary’s Chapel – Every Saturday evening and Sunday morning, the island’s lone chapel has mass.

3. Watersport
Comino’s the perfect spot to try a variety of Watersport – being so secluded and having crystal clear waters. Here are a few ideas of what you can try here.
- Snorkeling – Get away from the crowds by swimming and snorkeling in the beautiful waters of Saint Mary’s Bay, Saint Nichola’s Bay, or the Crystal Lagoon (accessible only by boat).
- Diving – Comino is also well-known for its diving places, which include the Santa Marija Caves and other locations on the island suited for divers of all levels of experience. You may schedule a diving vacation or your first scuba dive with one of Malta’s and Gozo’s many diving centers.
- Kayaking – Another excellent option to see Comino’s quiet coves and stunning sea caves.
4. Go Camping
Right next to Santa Maria Bay, there are camping grounds and also public bathrooms and showers. If you’re looking to camp in Malta, Comino is by far the best location for a real campaign experience, in nature, without many people or amenities around.
Santa Maria Bay is a great place to unwind. The island of Comino has its own white sandy beach. A great place to spend the day relaxing in the sun, renting a deck chair and an umbrella. Showers, a public restroom, and a restaurant are all available here. You may take a boat to Santa Maria Bay, walk over from the Blue Lagoon, or take a jeep shuttle from the Blue Lagoon.
